The town of L'Aquila

Founded in 1245,
L'Aquila is one of the most renowned medieval towns in Italy. Located in Abruzzo, a region in the center of Italy, L'Aquila maintains intact the ancient charm: the ruined remains of Amiternum, the castles, the monasteries, the churches and the chapels speak to us of history, of art, of the spirit of ancient civilizations. A visit to the main monuments of the town will reveal the superb facades of the Basilica di Santa Maria di Collemaggio, a splendid piece of work of Romanesque-Gothic architecture, and of the Basilica di San Bernardino; the originality of the Fontana delle 99 cannelle (13th century), almost a symbol of the city; the grandeur of the Castello Cinquecentesco, the magnificent fortress built during the Spanish domination (16th century), where the National Museum of Abruzzo and a Conference Center are now located. Touristic itineraries cannot exclude the surrounding environment, where Nature enchants: the Gran Sasso d'Italia with its majestic peaks, with the valley of river Aterno, with its high plains, its woods, grottos, lakes and spring; the National Park, rich in secular woods, springs and waterfalls, and in an exceptional variety of flora and fauna, one of the most interesting and picturesque mountainous areas in Italy.
